Container or dump trailer: which should you choose?

Short answer
The trailer wins if you already own a vehicle with the right hitch, your load stays under 4,500 lb, and you have time to make the trips yourself: Home Depot rents a 6×10 dump trailer at $239 per day. The container wins in every other case — especially one the ads never mention: Home Depot will not rent you a vehicle capable of towing it, will not hook it up for you, and requires a 2-5/16 in ball. Without your own truck, the trailer isn't an option at any price.
What does a trailer really cost?

- 5×8 dump trailer: $217/day, max load 3,000 lb
- $500 credit-card deposit, 18+
- On top: tipping fees at the écocentre or sorting centre, which are NOT included
Why is the trailer so often impossible?
Because you need a tow vehicle, and Home Depot is explicit on three points: it does not rent vehicles that can tow, hooking up is your responsibility, and the 6×10 needs a 2-5/16 in ball (the 5×8 takes 2 in). In the city, most renovating homeowners have neither.
Also worth checking: dump trailers aren't stocked everywhere. The 6×10 is at Saint-Constant, Laval, Anjou and Saint-Bruno; the 5×8 at Beaubien Ouest, Greenfield Park and Boisbriand. Home Depot's large-equipment delivery does not serve Montreal.
Where is the break-even?
On weight, not price. The 6×10 caps at 4,500 lb, about 2 tonnes — less than the included tonnage on our 20-yard. A mixed-debris load hits that ceiling before the trailer looks full. For concrete, brick or soil, one trailer will never be enough.

How many cubic yards does a dump trailer hold?
No Montreal rental company publishes it. Home Depot gives dimensions and a maximum load in pounds, never a volume in cubic yards. That's a real absence, not an omission on our part.
Is there a weekend rate?
No. Home Depot's ladder runs 4 hours, day, week and 4 weeks. There is no weekend package.
